Looking back on a successful workshop

Looking back on a successful workshop &ldquo;Flexibility and Market Trends&rdquo; on the 29th of June, we are already visioning the next Digital Data Day with a focus on Digitalization of the Energy Sector taking place at the beginning of next year. As a frontrunner in every aspect of the energy transition TenneT is aware of the importance of the market parties and their input, which can be translated into project ideas. Digitisation vs Digitalization

Digitization vs Digitalization, why is it important to distinguish them? 
Digitization stands for the transformation of analogue information into digital, whereas Digitalization represents the conversion of processes into digital ones by means of digital technologies in order to achieve more efficient business models.
Both, Digitization and Digitalization are important to the energy transition, for example when data,obtained from digitalized sensors in cars share weather data. By sharing the data, it can be used to support weather forecasts to determine the production of renewables! TenneT and market parties can use this data to improve insights in grid loads and to act upon the behaviour of production and consumption of energy.

Electrification across sectors

Electrification is growing across sectors, decentralised and variable renewable energy is changing the behaviour of the electricity system and challenges the TSO's core tasks. As the system asks for changes, TenneT sees digitalization as the key enabler of the energy transition. But, how so? Simple, digitalization and the development of smart grids facilitate markets for new actors and roles, such as prosumers contributing to a reliable electricity system, and even facilitating sector coupling. Digitalization is crucial to integrate the European electricity market and at the same time operate the grid safely.

Decarbonisation in the electricity sector

The energy transition is here, and the energy sector is on its way to decarbonisation. Therefore, as of now it is a matter of accelerating the implementation of sustainable energy, while at the same time keeping energy supply secure and affordable. In that sense the TSO's now face the challenge of rapid decarbonisation of the electricity system, which means major efforts should take place in grid capacity expansion, and integration of variable renewable energy. To cope with these challenges and global climate changes, the energy sector and neutral stakeholders such as TenneT must go through a digital transformation. In our joint thesis paper with the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/university-of-bayreuth/">Universit&auml;t Bayreuth</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/fraunhofer-fit/">Fraunhofer-Institut f&uuml;r Angewandte Informationstechnik FIT</a>&nbsp;we suggest 5 main points to be considered:

<li>Decentralisation requires bridging the digital gap</li>
<li>Digital certificates for decarbonisation</li>
<li>Agile sandbox testing and learning</li>
<li>Carbon emissions of grid expansion measures</li>

EQUIGY

Digitalization supports the energy system of the future through smart grids and connecting new flexibility sources. To picture how this is carried out, here is a clear example of how a new digital platform supports balancing of the electricity system: the crowd balancing platform, hosted by EQUIGY!
TenneT is using the Crowd Balancing Platform (CBP) as a portal for balancing services (aFRR) in the Netherlands and is developing the CBP for congestion management services in Germany. The CBP supports the ease of connection for market parties by making use of an API connection.

What is the potential of Blockchain technology in the energy sector?

The architecture of Blockchain technology makes it a secure and trustable technology for data exchange, promising for the energy sector. Blockchain technology provides a secure and decentralised way of data exchange and storage . This works through sets of blocks and unique hashes which are the backbone of the blockchain. Every user within a specific blockchain has the same information or set of blocks as other users, which creates an alternative of centralized cloud storing to a decentralized infrastructure.
The energy sector is becoming decarbonized, decentralized and distributed. Blockchain technology allows the creation of smart contracts which are highly secure and useful for transparent transactions. In the Netherlands, the Crowd Balancing Platform is already making use of blockchain technology to enable aggregators to use decentralized assets to provide automatic frequency restoration reserves (aFRR). Together with other partners such as TSO&rsquo;s and industry we are exploring more opportunities to make use of the technology, for instance by facilitating intelligent charging of decentralised batteries connected to the grid to reduce grid congestion.

The 3D's

Decarbonisation&rsquo;s&nbsp;seed was firstly put on the agenda in the Brundtland report of 1987 (Our Common Future) when the definition of sustainable development came to exist, and years after in 2015 sprouted as international concern and recognition with the countries signing the Paris Agreement. Now, Europe sharpens this ambition with the &ldquo;Fit for 55&rdquo; plan, part of the European Green Deal, committing to cutting emissions by at least 55% by 2030. In the last decades the integration of renewables has been rapidly increasing, and will only accelerate in the future. However, the integration of renewables fundamentally changes the dynamics in the electricity grid and so, action needs to be taken!
Decentralisation&nbsp;results in democratisation. Both production and consumption behaviours change, not only in time, but also in space. This results in a movement from a centralised fossil fuel based production centres to large (offshore) wind farms and big solar production, typically build in other locations than conventional production. Together, the energy system becomes more and more customer centric, where customers are not only consumers, but also prosumers! PV systems, home batteries, and electrification of mobility and heating is a true paradigm shift in the energy world! The new role of the prosumer will become more and more dominant, where decentral assets can be aggregated by market parties to monetize small assets throughout the energy markets. In this way, energy markets are democratised by new entrants.
Digitalisation&nbsp;is a key enabler to drive the energy transition. Integrating renewables in a grid that was designed for conventional power generation is challenging. Since weather cannot follow demand a huge transition needs to take place in the way load and generation is forecasted, how market parties organize their trading strategies, and in balancing and operating the grid. Digitalisation plays a central role in enabling connectivity of assets and to facilitate sector coupling efforts to create new innovative and data driven business cases to drive the energy transition and to maintain the security of supply.
How the future will be we don't know, all we know is that it will be Digital, Distributed and Decarbonised!

How 3D's symbolize the energy transition?! It's been several months since we started the Digital Data Days platform, and of course it seems logical that when we refer to the 3 D's as the Digital Data Days. However, the letter D represents more in the energy transition!

Now more than ever it is a time to reflect on what has happened this year. The pandemic changed everything, from the way we work to the way we relate to others. We believed on a new normality and even though we haven&rsquo;t yet achieved it, it is still on the horizon as another goal to pursue! Digital technologies for a sustainable energy future

We are pleased to have <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-marc-fabian-k%C3%B6rner-763ab4128/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Marc-Fabian K&ouml;rner</a> as our first 30 Minute Coffee Talk guest. He is a postdoctoral researcher at the <a title="" href="https://www.linkedin.com/school/university-of-bayreuth/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Bayreuth</a>, the <a title="" href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/fraunhofer-fit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fraunhofer FIT</a>, and the FIM Research Center where he works on digital solutions for the energy transition at the interface of Green Information Systems and Energy Informatics. In his research and projects, he currently focusses on digital technologies that allow the integration of decentralized assets in energy systems.

Wanted: Innovation

What is the Open Innovation Programme and what is its general goal?
Part of our task as one of Europe&rsquo;s largest TSOs is to design and develop a grid that can support our goals for a climate-neutral society. By 2030, we want to create a reliable backbone for our target grid, with transport capacities matching the decarbonisation and electrification plans of industry, households and transport. We have to design our projects to be future-proof, building grids with extra capacity factored in ahead of time to ensure a secure (green) electricity supply for all sectors of the economy.
For this to happen, we need to work closely with partners in the value chain and market parties that wish to contribute to shaping the network of the future. We are pleased to announce that distribution network companies Alliander, Enexis and Stedin are collaborating with us in this programme, as common challenges require a joint effort to guarantee a future-proof network. Collaboration is key to unlocking the potential of the existing grid and accommodating future needs. To this end, we&rsquo;re launching our first Open Innovation Programme to address the question&nbsp;&ldquo;How can we make optimal use of the transport capacity and connection points to the electricity grid?&rdquo;
With the open innovation challenge we want to activate external innovation power to collaborate with TenneT. We are looking for innovative proposals with innovative solutions. Proposals could include smart technological solutions, more flexibility in the grid, managing grid congestion, informing customers (including educating and training them), adapting laws and regulations or adjusting tariffs.

What was your role during the kick-off event and what was your impression of the event?
The kick-off of the open innovation program was rather inspiring. Over 140 registrations from different organizations were received. Unfortunately we only had the space to welcome a maximum of 100 participants during this program. The ambiance was great and many inspiring ideas were already shared by the participants as well. 
My role during the kickoff was to be available for questions of the participants. We have had many inspiring conversations already and are of high expectations to the hand in proposals. 
In the next phase of the program a panel of experts, including me, will review the received proposals. The 5 winning proposals will go to the next round in this intensive open innovation program!

What positive implications for TenneT could ensue from the programme / from the kick-off event?
We are operating, building, and maintaining the grid in challenging times. This requires focus, and doing the right things to prepare and build the target grid of 2050. However, the world around us is moving in a fast pace as well. Apart from focussing on our key tasks, we have to make time available to listen to the outside world and to include ideas and collaborate to speed up our delivery pace. With the open innovation program external ideas and innovative solutions can be brought in to the organization and lead to new partnerships and innovation.

Open Innovation Programme

TenneT is always looking for solutions to make a smarter and more optimal use of the transmission and distribution grids. We focus on working closely with partners in the value chain and market parties that wish to actively contribute to shaping the network of the future. For this purpose, the <a title="" href="https://magazines.tennet.eu/open-innovation-programme/challenge-yourself" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Open Innovation Programme</a> has been launched. How Blockchain Technology enables Flexibility for TenneT

Equigy is owned by several European transmission system operators and the platform is operational in multiple countries. Because energy markets and systems vary across nations, the platform is built in a flexible way so that it can meet the local needs in a specific market. This is realized by a generic core that is re-used across countries, whilst some specific components on top of that tailor the implementation to specific market rules, specifications and priorities. The CBP is also future-proof because the platform can function as one-stop-shop, by aiming for standardization of the data communication around aggregated flexibility. The objective is that, in the end, an FSP who is connected in one country is able to participate in other countries with limited additional IT investments.
For TenneT&rsquo;s current situation, the adjustability of the flex services provided via the CBP is beneficial because of national differences between the German and the Dutch energy markets. To illustrate, in the Netherlands BSPs can connect to TenneT via the CBP to deliver secondary reserve (aFRR). Thereby, the CBP lowers the bar for FSPs (resp. BSPs) with a small asset pool to connect to TenneT because the CBP allows them to connect via commonly recognized internet communication standards. The BSP connects via APIs to the CBP; thereby the BSP&rsquo;s information flows about the bids and the actual activation of assets is forwarded to TenneT. A recent onboarding showed that establishing the IT connection between the FSP and TenneT via the CBP easy and fast.
In Germany, the principle of information flows is similar. However, here the CBP fulfils a role in redispatch services. The redispatch 2.0 implicates that energy units with a capacity of 100kW or more need to participate in the congestion management schedule. However, also smaller installations can offer a solution to congestion issues too. The CBP provides this niche of market parties a vehicle to offer their redispatch services to grid operators. The CBP may also fulfil this functionality in the Netherlands, because congestion management in the Netherlands is an increasing concern.
Equigy plays a key role in the acceleration of the energy transition and the integration of the energy system. Promising pilot projects in both Germany and the Netherlands have demonstrated the large added value of the Crowd Balancing Platform for operation of the grid. Moreover, successful onboardings and several BSPs that are currently connecting to TenneT via the CBP proof that Equigy also add value to their businesses.

TenneT&rsquo;s aspiration for Flexibility: &ldquo;We are driving the energy transition by ensuring that all technologies can be unlocked by market parties and grid operators&hellip;&rdquo; &ndash; to meet this aspiration TenneT has running multiple Flexibility Initiatives. One of them is connecting Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs), respectively Balancing Service Providers (BSPs), to TenneT using the Crowd Balancing Platform (CBP), operated by <a title="" href="https://equigy.com/" target="_self">Equigy</a>. The CBP is a blockchain-based system that enables communication and information flows between the parties involved in the transaction of flexibility services. By means of standardized resource registration, bidding, activation and measurement flows, the platform enables aggregators of distributed energy resources (DERs) to offer their flexibility services to the market.

On to the the next phase!

During the Pitches &amp; Deep Dive event in April, the top 5 selected companies showed great enthusiasm and willingness to solve the key innovation challenge. On the first day, all teams shortly pitched their solutions to refresh the memories of our experts from TenneT and the DSO&rsquo;s. After this, in five rotational rounds, the participants had the chance to further discuss their solutions, ask questions and gain insights from the experts. The next morning, it was time for the second and final round of pitches. Each team elaborated on their current hurdles, pitched a roadmap about the expected process in the next three months (Test &amp; Scale Phase) and highlighted the benefits of a potential partnership with TenneT and / or the DSO&rsquo;s.
During the two-day event external partners Oost NL and Set Ventures gave inspirational speeches on entrepreneurship and risk-taking, encouraging all participants with real-life examples to think outside the box. After all pitches were given, the experts decided on the three most promising solutions. The winners are:

<li>KrakenFlex: Digitalising the Dutch network through intelligent flexibility</li>
<li>N-Side: Probabilistic Congestion Forecast for Grid Operators</li>

These top 3 solutions will now enter the three-month Test &amp; Scale Phase. During the Revealing Event on the 6th of July, the three teams will present and defend their solutions in front of a jury. The jury will share feedback on the three solutions and attendees will have the opportunity to meet representatives from other organisations, players in the energy industry, and other TenneT and DSO colleagues.

Next phase of Open Innovation Programme

After a successful kick-off event in February, 57 ideas for the Open Innovation Programme have been submitted. Each participant submitted a pitch video with supporting information about their solution. From this enormous amount of submissions, the top 5 were chosen and invited for the Pitches &amp; Deep Dives event.

Successful CO2 Monitor Workshop with FfE

During the kick-off event, the main subject of discussion with 20 partners from the fields of grid, energy sales, industry and science was the development of a CO2 monitor to provide data on greenhouse gas emission intensity.

Together the basics and objectives of the platform were discussed and use cases were introduced. It became apparent that there is a great deal of interest in corresponding data. This is certainly also a decisive factor for the success of the energy tranisition, as this information contributes to the behavior of consumers. In addition, this data also plays a role in the individual "footprints" of companies.
As an example, in the Netherlands, corresponding data is already published on <a title="Co2 monitor" href="https://co2monitor.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">co2monitor.nl</a>.

Energy Weather Report now available on Weerplaza

The energy weather report was developed to make people aware of fluctuations in the weather and our dependence on renewable energy, especially since energy production will increasingly depend on wind and sun in the coming decades. It is important that we use available energy sparingly and use green power at times when it is plentiful. This results in less use of fossil fuels, which consequently means less CO2 emissions and slows down global warming. Moreover, smart energy use has a positive impact on the load on the electricity grid.
The reports are shown twice a week, on Mondays on Weerplaza and Thursdays on Weeronline. Infoplaza added a new element in cooperation with TenneT, Gasunie and the NVDE. It explains how yields are constructed and what regional differences there are. In addition, as in the previous energy weather reports, viewers are given tips for saving energy and using renewable energy at the right times.
On a bright day, more solar energy is available. When the wind is strong, wind turbines are running at full speed. At these times, there is a lot of clean energy available and energy is cheap. Then, when we run our laundry and charge our car, we do so mostly on renewable energy. On a cold day, on the other hand, it is important to keep the heat inside. Being smart about the weather has great advantages. For example, we need to use less gas and coal, thus reducing our dependence on foreign energy. This is also better for the climate. If you have a real-time energy contract, then it is even more advantageous. In short, follow the energy weather report and make the weather work for you.

Since May 1, 2023, energy weather reports have been available on Weerplaza and Weeronline twice a week. With this, parent company Infoplaza is taking over from TenneT, Gasunie and the Dutch Renewable Energy Association (NVDE).

⚡ From the&nbsp; environmentally conscious alignment of electricity consumption to optimizing the charging behavior of electric vehicles - the CO2 monitor provides valuable data for a sustainable energy future.
The groundbreaking tool enables the well-founded calculation of the CO2 intensity in the German electricity mix in accordance with the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). This requires transmission system operators to provide data on the proportion of greenhouse gas emissions in the electricity supplied.
The CO2 monitor does not only show the actual, recalculated CO2 intensity but also a forecast of the expected CO2 share in the electricity mix for the following day. The CO2 monitor thus offers industrial companies and private consumers a wide range of application options to make their own electricity consumption more environmentally friendly and transparent. For example, private consumers can use the current and forecast CO2 share to adjust their electricity consumption to minimize emissions. The data can also be used, for example, to optimize the charging behavior of electric vehicles with regard to the CO2 share in the electricity mix. Companies can use the data to determine their carbon footprint and use it for sustainability reporting.

CO2 monitor is online!

In close cooperation with FfE, TenneT has developed a pioneering prototype of an innovative CO2 monitor. It has now gone online and is available to everyone <a href="https://co2-monitor.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>. The web application calculates and visualizes the greenhouse gas intensity of the German electricity mix in accordance with the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III).

Launch of the "Nationaal Energie Dashboard"

The launch of the <a href="https://ned.nl/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Energy Dashboard</a> stems from the growing demand for accessible, up-to-date energy data from the market, society and government. This data is essential for the transition to a sustainable, supply-driven energy system. It is becoming increasingly important to align production, consumption and grid capacity. This is a task for all of us.
Importance for the energy transition By responding flexibly to the supply of solar and wind energy, both consumers and companies can save costs and reduce the pressure on the electricity grid. &nbsp;Unnecessary investments can also be avoided when energy is consumed at the times when it is in high supply, so when the sun is shining and/or the wind is blowing.
Free accessible energy data for everyone From its launch on March 21, everyone will have free access to <a href="https://ned.nl/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ned.nl</a>. Since the historical, current and predictive energy data can be downloaded or obtained via an API key, the data is widely accessible. It can be used, for example, in applications where energy suppliers give customers insight into their CO2 emissions. Data and insights from <a href="https://ned.nl/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ned.nl</a> can also&nbsp;support decisions for a future-proof energy supply. RTL 4 is already actively using this free data for its weekly Energy Weather Report. From now on, this Energy Weather Report will be a regular part of RTL's Friday weather report.
Connector in the data ecosystem The ambition of the National Energy Dashboard is to act as a connector in the data ecosystem. By providing transparency in energy data, the platform aims to further accelerate the energy transition. The dashboard wants to be an inspiration for professionals and policy makers in finding innovative solutions to energy issues, with the goal of realizing a more sustainable energy future together.

Launch of NED

Data on energy generation, use and CO2 emissions are becoming increasingly important for the energy transition. For this purpose, Gasunie and TenneT have launched the <a href="https://ned.nl/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Energy Dashboard</a> on March 21, in cooperation with the Dutch Renewable Energy Association (NVDE) and the National Climate Platform (NKP). The dashboard is a further development of the existing websites Energieopwek, the CO2monitor and the Energy Weather Report.
